Root (Muladhara) Chakra
The first chakra, muladhara, or “root chakra,” acts as the root of the body. It is located at the base of the spine. Muladhara means root, and is associated with the earth element, linked to your ability to dig in and feel firmly rooted in your life. Its associated color is red, hence its links to the earth.
This wheel of energy is associated with your sense of security, familial relationships and your feeling of home. When energy is flowing through the first chakra, you feel firmly grounded in yourself and the world around you.
Physical signs of chakra imbalance
When your first chakra is out of alignment, you may experience pain in your intestines and lower body. This misalignment can manifest in the physical body in a number of ways, including:
-
Weight gain
-
Weight loss
-
Incontinence
Mental signs of chakra imbalance
When working with the root chakra, think about your relationship to yourself and the world around you. Where do you feel grounded? When do you feel calm and stable? When your root chakra is blocked, you might experience some of the following:
-
Increased distractibility
-
Rushing from one task to another
-
Increased feelings of anxiety, stress, or depression
-
Feeling stuck
-
Inability to take action
Why you should align this chakra
When your first chakra is aligned, you’ll be able to tap into its ability to support a calm and steady energy throughout your body. You’ll feel grounded and comfortably situated in your body and the world around you. Stress about your sense of place and belonging will dissipate. When you can be assured that your basic needs are met, you’ll be able to focus on your relationships and personal goals.
As you work to align the root chakra, you will allow energy to flow freely through your body, establishing your connection to the earth and your surroundings. You may feel an increased attachment to yourself and your home as you ground yourself—physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Sacral (Svadhisthana) Chakra
The second chakra, called svadhistana, is associated with the color orange and is located at the lower belly and inner pelvis. “Svadhisthana” translates to one’s own abode. According to Sahara Rose, the colors and the symbols associated with the different energy centers are reflective of the vibration of the chakras. When the ancient rishis meditated on the energy of the chakras, these were the colors and symbols that arose in their mind’s eye.
This chakra is associated with sensuality and creativity. The primary function of this energy center is pleasure and overall enjoyment of life. When this chakra is balanced and functioning properly, we can expect our relationship with ourselves and the world to feel harmonious, pleasureful, and nurturing.
The svadhisthana chakra is associated with the element of water. The water element is all about flow, flexibility, and freedom of expression when it comes to emotions and sensuality. This energy center, when balanced, offers direct access to flow, flexibility, and fun. In working with this chakra, you will address your relationship with both others and yourself. Personally, you’ll discover you have unlimited creative power; you’ll learn how to cultivate a healthy relationship to pleasure; and you’ll gain insight into your default reactions and deepest emotions and learn how to sit with the depth of your feelings. You will more freely express your wants, needs, and emotions with others. You will also learn how to express yourself more skillfully and how to begin setting healthy boundaries.
Physical signs of chakra imbalance

Ovarian cysts and other reproductive issues

Urinary tract infections
-
Impotence
-
Pain during intercourse
-
Complications with the bladder and kidneys

Mental signs of chakra imbalance
Blocked chakras can also greatly affect the quality of our mind and thoughts. Mentally, blocked sacral energy can manifest as issues such as co-dependency or feeling overwhelmed by our emotions. Other signs your sacral chakra might be blocked:
-
Overindulgence in sexual fantasy
-
Lack of interest in sex all together

You will be able to freely express your wants and needs in relationships, and pleasure will be a priority. Creativity and visualization will become easy for you to tap into when your sacral is aligned.
Solar Plexas/Naval (Manipura) Chakra
The third chakra, called Manipura, is located at the navel. “Manipura” means “lustrous gem of the city,” and is directly linked to your sense of self. Its associated color is yellow, hence its links to fire and, more broadly, the sun. Think of this chakra as your body’s energy powerhouse, says Stephanie Snyder, a yoga teacher based in San Francisco. This energy center is associated with your self-esteem, sense of purpose, personal identity, individual will, digestion, and metabolism. When consciousness moves freely in this center, you are empowered by trans formative energy.
Physical signs of chakra imbalance
When the navel chakra is out of alignment, digestive issues can arise. This misalignment can manifest in the physical body in a variety of ways, including:
-
Improper processing of nutrients
-
Constipation

-
Issues with the pancreas
-
Diseases of the colon
Mental signs of chakra imbalance
As you work with the navel chakra, cultivate a willingness to gain insight into your understanding of power, individuality, and identification. Are there areas of your life where you feel powerless? How does this manifest? When your navel chakra is blocked, you might experience some of the following:
-
Difficulty in skillful self-expression
-
Aggressive, overly rigid, or controlling behavior
-
Quick to anger
-
A victim’s mentality
-
Neediness
-
Lack of direction
-
Feeling afraid or lacking courage
-
Poor self-esteem
-
Feelings of stagnation or inertia
Why you should align this chakra
When the navel chakra is in healthy alignment, you will be comfortable with your own inherent power and, also, become empowered. You will have a sense of who you are and why you are here. When you connect with your purpose, you gain a deeper understanding of how you as an individual can contribute to the collective in a beneficial way. You will let go of the things—whether it’s your job or bank account balance—that you depend on to define who you are. Those things may have value but overvaluing anything that is subject to change is a quick road to suffering. You have inherent value; take the time through practice to investigate it, and you will be less dependent on external sources of happiness.
As you work to align the navel chakra, you will allow for the trapped energy to move more freely through the body, creating a higher sense of purpose and allowing you to better understand your personal identity. You may find that you can clearly articulate your needs and desires and find relief from digestive issues and mental blocks.
